Your awesome is a series about some pretty great people living their own awesomeness. I dig them and I think you might too.
The first EVER is Elea from Covet + Keep. We met like anyone does these days — via instagram. With Covet + Keep in Van and STK in Toronto we've never actually met, but with a few phone calls, emails, and a failed video chat attempt under our belts, I can say for sure that we are on the same wavelength. This girl fucking gets it.
Elea creates minimal jewellery, each with a braille message and girl's name. They're sassy and strong but also wearable conversation-starters that leave you itching to hear the rest of the story (Who's Kate? Why isn't she sorry? Good for her for not being sorry!). Covet + Keep has sass you can relate to. And rock.
Check out her current line. You'll like it.
And if you didn't already know:
We've joined forces to bring you a super sweet Valentine's giveaway on instagram. If you haven't entered, you've got until Feb 14.
Kate - reads 'I'm not sorry'
First off, who are you and what do you do?
My name is Elea (Ellie), I'm the owner + designer of covet + keep jewelry.
Blayke - reads 'shit just got real'
How long have you been working on Covet + Keep? How did you get there?
It all started with the idea about 9 years ago. It sat in the back of my mind, but my life was headed in another direction and I never thought I would end up being self-employed or starting something of my own. About 4 years ago something changed in me. I was so unhappy where I was and I realized I needed to create happiness and job satisfaction for myself. I started writing the business plan which took about a year. I took all my savings and borrowed some more and launched.
Polly - reads 'fuck I love you'
What should we know about the Polly ring?
The shape makes it a magic fit. It fits a 6-8 ring size because of it's tear drop shape. You can twist it on its side and get it over a larger knuckle with ease.
Why ‘Polly’? What’s the story behind all of your pieces having lady names?
All of the pieces are named after people in my life or people that inspire me. The Polly is the only one that is inspired by a man and translated to a ladies name. It's named after my husband, Pol. I fucking love him. He is the most incredibly supportive man.
Nancy - reads 'fight dirty'
I think we're each chasing our own idea of an awesome life.
What does that look like for you & are you there yet?
I'm getting closer every year. An awesome life is a life where I can adventure to great places, feel the sun on my skin, swim, hike, connect with friends and family over good meals. I want simplicity and authenticity. I'm sick of pretending to like something. That's not to say I won't try (most) things once.
Part of my vision of a good life is working hard. I like the long hours when my heart is in it. I like getting swept away in work and realizing it's 8pm and I haven't started to cook dinner, but I need balance in that. I need days when I allow myself to not be feeling it and go walk the dog, grab some friends, and head to the beach for a picnic — or whatever it is that I feel like doing. A balanced full life is what I am striving for.
What do you love most about life right now?
That's tough — I love a lot about life right now. I was just on a month long holiday in Australia and I found myself missing a lot about my everyday life. I love my husband, my job, my dog, my cat, my little house, Victoria where I live. I feel blessed af.
What keeps you moving forward?
Fear and anxiety that it will all crumble? Haha. That and dreaming of bigger and better things within covet + keep.
Jessica - reads 'there is no beauty without some strangeness'
Where do you you see yourself in 5 years?
Ooof, I've always struggled with this one. In a pretty similar place, but maybe with a bub if we're lucky. Hopefully I will be lucky enough to ride this wave for a very long time.
Who, real or fictional, do you admire?
The dalai lama. I have been meditating a little bit as of late and I am really appreciating the calm it has brought me.
Tindy - reads 'b' & 's'
What's 1 good piece of advice you have?
Don't whiz on the electric fence. Nooooo! (you can leave that out)
[Editor's note: No way. Leaving that in.]
Pertaining to business? Market research! Ask people if what you want to make, curate, etc is what they want to buy, for how much, and where. You might be surprised at some of the answers.
Who, hands down, is really killin' it right now?
Karen King of Said the King!!!
[Another editor's note: Totally unsolicited. But I'll take it. ;)]
Sarah - reads 'polite as fuck'
